Flashback Friday

I'm currently sorting through pictures from 2008 so I can put together a photo book. When I came across this one from last January, I knew it would be perfect for a Flashback.

This is Rachael and her friend Alex playing the piano last January (2008). Cute kids.

And this is Rachael and Alex hammering away last week. Still cute kids, one year later. What I like best about the two pictures is not that you can tell how they have grown, nor the fact that we like Rachael in pink and Alex in orange, but that in both pictures if you look at the background it's clear I am still putting away my Christmas decorations.

At least I'm consistent.

Happy Friday.

Ice Storm Day 2

Just in case you're wondering how the storm is going, here are a couple of updated photos.

This was taken this morning. We had lots of melting and freezing and melting and freezing yesterday, and the icicles are pretty fantastic.

And now we have an inch or so of fresh snow on top.

We're very fortunate, though, we still have power and water. Most of the city is without power, including the water company. If power doesn't get restored to the water company we will lose our water tomorrow. So we are gratefully warm and happy and filling some containers of water, just in case.

Ice Storm

Today is the start of perhaps the worst ice storm we have seen since we moved here. I know it doesn't look like much, but it's at least a half inch of solid ice on everything. I make jokes all the time about how school gets canceled because of a skiff of snow, but this ice is serious stuff. Even the university here canceled classes today. Don't worry about us, though; we're all set.

Ryan has the perfect work-from-home scenario going. (Note the two different laptops, the TV remote, and the Wii remote. I'm sure he's hiding a Diet Coke somewhere).

And we have a lovely pot of leftover homemade chicken noodle soup (seriously homemade: we roasted the chicken last Sunday and I made the egg noodles from scratch) and a nice warm pan of fresh rolls to keep us going.

We just hope the power doesn't go out for too long... we're a little low on firewood. Might have to start burning the scrap heap from Ryan's workshop.

If you know us at all you know we took tons of pictures of the ice. Check Ryan's blog or Kristin's blog for more icicle pictures.

Back to the Usual

Today we were lining up the little kids in the hallway, waiting to go back into the Primary room. We had them all pretty quiet and reverent, until my own precious three year old busted out into song:

"Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Pirate's Life for Me."

It's rather difficult to get the kids to take you seriously when you are fighting off the giggles.

Hives

Rachael had an allergic reaction to something this week. I still haven't figured out what the "something" is. She started on Tuesday afternoon with a light sprinkling of bumps on her arms and legs, a couple on her face, and a few across her belly. I gave her some Benadryl that night and put her to bed. By Wednesday morning they completely covered her from head to toe. We spent all of Wednesday taking antihistamines and using anti-itch creams.

By Thursday morning most of her body was looking pretty good (although her face was worse, probably because she scratched at it all night) so I went ahead and sent her to preschool. No dice... after about an hour a preschool the director called and said Rachael seemed really uncomfortable. I picked her up (which upset her immensely) and we went to WalMart for more Benadryl. She did get to go back to preschool for a few minutes at the end, which salved the wound of having to leave early. Thursday night she complained about her feet hurting, and when I finally got her socks off late that night I discovered the bottom of her feet were covered with hives. More Aveeno cream.

Friday she was looking much better, so Rachael and I rewarded ourselves for having suffered through a cold last week and the hives this week by spending the day shopping at the mall. She even got a new Build-A-Bear to celebrate (well, and because I had a coupon). Today she looks completely clear!

I will settle for not knowing the cause of the outbreak as long as she never has to have the hives again. And I hope that if it does happen again we figure it out!

Inauguration

Rachael watched the inauguration with me today. Her expression captures a lot of what I feel: hopeful optimism mixed with fear and doubt. Plus, you know, he's a Democrat.

She's just happy to have her picture taken with Sasha & Malia's dad. Seriously.

I have a cousin who names her kids after presidents. (Really! She has four so far: Lincoln, Truman, Jefferson, and McKinley. They are positively adorable.) As of noon today she can officially add "Obama" to her list of names for the next baby.

We played in the snow... NOT!

Here is a picture of the beautiful snow we had this morning. It's about 2 inches of lovely powder.

These are the cute Tinkerbell boots we went and bought today just for the occasion. (I have resisted boots all winter because we really don't get that much snow, but these were a bargain at $8 for the pair).

And this is the face of the three year old that refused cooperation on any level, and ended up not ever going out to play. By this afternoon she decided that all the snow was melted (not true) so she didn't want to go out. I quit arguing with her.

She ended the night by leaving something special and very messy in her underwear that earned her a quick bath and an early bedtime.

Tomorrow is another day...

Flashback Friday

Snow

Today in Richmond the temperature is a balmy zero degrees and we have a light dusting of snow. School, of course, is canceled. My friends and family out West are always in disbelief over how little snow it takes to cancel school here - sometimes even the forecast of snow is enough. I've been here three years now and it still makes me laugh.

So I dug out a picture from when we lived in Colorado. This is how much snow it takes before things start getting canceled out West. I did manage a couple of days off of work from this storm!

Crazy Hair

There won't be a report on how preschool went today... we have about an inch of snow and the high for today is 15 degrees, so school is canceled. It's just as well, Rachael has a cold.

Rachael has thin, fine hair; she always has. And she is a pretty restless sleeper. This leads to some pretty crazy hair mornings almost every morning. Today, as you can see, is a fine example of the wildness. The good news is that with a little water or spray detangler it comes right around and looks great.

Smile, Rachael.

The Skedeedo Fly

Ryan was tying up some new flies for a fly swap. The particular pattern he is tying is actually called a "Stealth Bomber," but as he was tying them up, I said, "neato skedeeo." Rachael then said, "What's a skedeedo?"

As you might have guessed the fly is now called the "Skedeedo Fly."

Flashback Friday

Dancing in the Rain
We have had quite a bit of rain lately, and I remembered a couple of years ago the first time Rachael and I went out and danced in the rain. It was a warm August afternoon and the water almost felt like warm water from the tap. Rachael was just about 18 months old and still a little unsteady on her feet, but we had a great time. We got soaked.

Preschool

Rachael had her first day of preschool today! She started at the Little Hands Preschool, which for her age is one day a week for three hours. Just about right.

Today's letter of the day was K, so one of the activities was to do tissue paper kites. She had so much fun!

She also learned a new song... she spent all afternoon singing variations on "Every letter makes a sound, K says kah." The best, though, is the video.

Cue the applause.

Box Day

We've been doing a little post-holiday sale shopping on the internet, and all the packages arrived today. It was fun to have a little something for everyone!

First, a skirt for me from Coldwater Creek. I got it for 70% off the regular price. Sweet!

Next, a cool T-shirt for Ryan. It wasn't actually on sale, but it's definitely the coolest shirt he owns now.

And the best deal of the day, some pink Columbia sandals for Rachael. I found them online in the Bargain Cave at Cabelas for about $6. I'm sure it will be the best deal of the summer!

Introducing...

Resplendent Rachael!
Another devotee of the Fancy Nancy cult, it involves lots of ribbon, feathers, and accessories.

Here she is magnificently decorating her Christmas thank-you cards (that we made on the computer with a Fancy Nancy picture), and extravagantly polishing her toenails.

Wait - I mean toes.

Living with a diva is going to be hard on the carpet, I can tell already.

Our Little Sunbeam

It's our little girl's first Sunday as a Sunbeam! This is a picture of her standing outside the building. She looks cold but really she's just folding her arms. We have been talking this up all week, so she was pretty excited to go. I don't know how long it will last - sooner or later she will figure out there are no toys in Primary.

Flashback Friday

It's become an annual tradition to take Rachael's picture on the kitchen table every New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. Why the kitchen table? By the time we get to the first of the year, it's the only place I can clear off quickly for a picture.
